🎸 How to Identify a Guitar
Fretboard Fred's quick-reference guide. Look at these features in order:
Body Shape
Strat? Tele? Les Paul? SG? Offset? Shape tells you the family immediately.
Headstock Shape
Every brand has a signature headstock. Fender, Gibson, PRS -- the head never lies.
Pickup Types
Single coil, humbucker, P90, mini-humbucker. Configuration tells you the era and model.
Serial Numbers
On the headstock, neck plate, or inside the body. The DNA of every guitar.
Bridge Type
Tune-o-matic, tremolo, hardtail, Floyd Rose. Narrows down the model fast.
Tuner Types
Kluson, Grover, locking, vintage-style. Tuners date a guitar better than most features.

🔧 Setup Basics
String Height (Action)
Action is the distance between strings and frets. Too high and it's hard to play. Too low and you get fret buzz. Most players want about 2mm at the 12th fret on the treble side, 2.5mm on the bass side. Measure with a ruler or action gauge.
How to adjust: On a Strat, raise or lower the saddle screws. On a Les Paul, turn the thumbwheels on the bridge posts. Small turns -- quarter turns at a time.
Truss Rod
The truss rod controls neck relief -- the slight bow in the neck. Too much bow = high action in the middle frets. Too flat = fret buzz everywhere. You want a tiny amount of relief -- about 0.2mm at the 8th fret when holding the string at frets 1 and 17.
Warning: Quarter turns only. Let the neck settle overnight between adjustments. If you're not confident, take it to a tech. Snapping a truss rod is an expensive mistake.
Intonation
If your guitar is in tune on open strings but sharp or flat at the 12th fret, your intonation is off. Compare the 12th fret note to the 12th fret harmonic. If the fretted note is sharp, move the saddle back (longer string). If flat, move it forward.
Tip: Always set intonation AFTER adjusting action and truss rod. New strings, tuned up, then intonate.
Pickup Height & Cleaning
🛡️ Spotting Fakes -- Fred's Guide
Fred's Rule: If the price seems too good to be true, it is.
Chinese copies have got scary good in the last 10 years. I've seen fakes that fooled shop owners. But there are always tells if you know where to look. Here's what I check every single time.
Logo & Headstock
-- Check the font. Fakes often get the lettering slightly wrong -- spacing, thickness, shape.
-- On Gibsons, the "i" in Gibson should NOT dot. It's an open-top "i".
-- Fender logos: check the spacing between letters, especially the "F" spaghetti logo on vintage models.
-- Look for sloppy inlay work. Real pearl inlays have natural variation. Plastic ones look too perfect.
Serial Numbers & Hardware
-- Serial numbers should be consistent with the era. Google the serial number format for the brand.
-- Cheap tuners are the biggest giveaway. Real Grovers and Klusons have weight and precision.
-- Check the bridge. Genuine tune-o-matics have clean casting. Fakes have rough edges and thin plating.
-- Weigh the guitar. Genuine Les Pauls are HEAVY (8-10 lbs). Fakes are often lighter -- cheaper wood.
The Detail Test
-- Look inside the control cavity. Real guitars have neat wiring. Fakes have messy solder and cheap pots.
-- Check the neck pocket (bolt-on guitars). It should be tight, clean, and have a date stamp or initials.
-- Fret ends: real quality guitars have smooth, rolled fret ends. Fakes have sharp, scratchy frets.
-- Smell the case. Sounds mad, but Chinese fake cases have a distinct chemical smell that takes months to fade.
